“MUSIC IN THE MAGIC WORLD OF FILM”
CONCERT-LECTURE
1 October, 19:00, Cinema Pasaka, Šv. Ignoto g. 4, Vilnius

Extracts of popular films with live music performed by Trimitas, the Lithuanian state wind orchestra

Organized by the 1st unnamed (2)international conference “Music and Sound design in Cinema / New Media”

In the beginning of the 20th century, after 30 years of silence, the silent film started talking and the cooperation between directors and composers has become very intense. This cooperation has delivered many film and music masterpieces. Some film directors have been inspired by great composers; others wanted original pieces, written specially for their films. This way, a number of celebrated film score composers have emerged who have been internationally acclaimed and awarded. The melodies they composed have left cinemas and became part of major world concert halls repertories. It is true that when we hear one melody or another, the images from our favourite films emerge in our mind’s eye.

On 1 October, film scores from well-known cartoons and films will be played in a visually enhanced concert.

During the evening, a short talk about the relations of sound and film, the role music plays in the creation of a mood or a character, as well as case studies in the significance of music for the success of a film will be delivered.

“GARDEN OF EDEN”
SCREENING
Introduced by  film director Algimantas Puipa
3 October, 18 pm
Cinema Pasaka, Šv. Ignoto g. 4, Vilnius

Garden of Eden
Premiere: September 2015
Genre: Drama
Country of creation: Lithuania
Distribution: Garsų Pasaulio Įrašai UAB
Duration: 100 min

The latest film by the Lithuanian director and screenplay writer Algimantas Puipa portrays what it is like to be close to paradise. The film shows the successful future of Lithuania as a country, the vision embodied by luxurious and entertainingly crazy lifestyles of senior citizens.

Garden of Eden is based on Janina Survilaitė’s novels and features many legendary representatives of the old Lithuanian cinema tradition. Professional, fully involved and free to improvise, actors Juozas Budraitis, Gražina Balandytė, Vaiva Mainelytė, Vytautas Paukštė, Vidas Petkevičius, Danutė Juronytė and many others, create roles which keep on haunting viewers afterwards.

The director creates a utopian vision of Lithuania, which is an economical success and thus attracts numbers of immigrants, while rich Lithuanians from around the world are returning to their homeland to spend their last days. The elderly of Garden of Eden have their own ways of surviving through the difficulties of the elderly age, and they would not give in to stagnation.

The film touches upon the issues of death, faith, euthanasia, lust for life and time lost, yet seriousness is often replaced by irony and sarcasm. Puipa succeeds in finding light, illuminating, and playful elements, as his film characters know how to have fun in their lives.
